Akiyoshidai Karst Plateau & Hagi Castle Town Circuit.
A day circuit through two of western Honshu's great contrasting landscapes. Akiyoshidai is Japan's largest karst plateau — 130 to 420 m of open grassland studded with over 40,000 white limestone pinnacles above a 10 km cave system. Hagi, an hour north, is an exquisitely preserved Edo-period castle town on the Sea of Japan — birthplace of five Meiji-era prime ministers and still enclosed within its original street grid. The loop from Yamaguchi fits both in an unhurried day.

YamaguchiStart · Start in Yamaguchi city — a compact prefectural capital with a fine five-storied pagoda and good coffee options before the road west. Head out on Route 316 toward Mine and the plateau.
Akiyoshidai Karst PlateauScenic Point · Japan's largest karst plateau at 130–420 m elevation, dotted with over 40,000 white limestone pillars rising from open grassland. The Akiyoshidai road winds through an alien landscape. Best in autumn when the surrounding grass turns gold and the white stone glows.
Akiyoshido CaveScenic Point · Second-longest cave in Japan at 10.7 km total, with 1 km open to guided tour. Formed 300 million years ago in limestone that was once a tropical coral reef. Temperature inside is a constant 16°C year-round — bring a layer.
