Echigo-Akiyamago Gorge — Sakae to the Nakatsugawa Wilderness.
A ride into one of Japan Top 100 Unexplored Areas. From Sakae village the road follows the Nakatsugawa gorge deep into the mountains between Mount Naeba and Mount Toko, past sheer cliffs, suspension bridges and tiny mountain hamlets that were cut off from the world for centuries. Remote, narrow and gloriously quiet, with beech and maple forest that blazes in October. Snowbound in winter — ride it late spring to autumn.

Sakae Village (Michi-no-Eki Shinetsu Sakae)Start · Far northeastern Nagano, on the Chikuma river. Stock up here — the Akiyamago valley to the south has almost no services.
Nakatsugawa GorgeScenic Point · The road narrows and clings to the gorge as the Nakatsu river cuts sheer cliffs on both sides. Watch for rockfall and single-lane sections.
Kiriake OnsenRestaurant · A remote dig-your-own hot-spring hamlet — a good place to rest and eat in the heart of the valley.
