The Rainbow Line loops above the Mikata Five Lakes on Fukui's Wakasa coast, each lake a different shade of blue thanks to varying salinity. Now toll-free, the ridge road climbs Mt Baijodake to a summit park of five sky terraces overlooking the lakes and the Sea of Japan. Clear-water beaches line the approach.
