Northern Kyoto's Tango Peninsula delivers one of western Japan's finest coastal rides. Route 178 threads between the Sea of Japan and forested hills past Amanohashidate — one of Japan's three classic scenic views — then north to Ine no Funaya, a bay lined with 230 traditional wooden boathouses built flush to the waterline since the Edo period. The road ends at the dramatic cliffs of Cape Kyogamisaki, Kyoto Prefecture's northernmost point. Best in early summer or autumn when crowds are thin.
