Nakasendo Kiso Valley — Magome to Tsumago Post Road.
The Nakasendo was the inland Edo-period highway connecting Tokyo to Kyoto, parallel to the coastal Tokaido. The Kiso Valley section preserves the most atmospheric stretch of post towns anywhere in Japan — Magome and Tsumago — where stone-paved streets, no telephone wires, and 17th-century inns transport the rider into a Hokusai woodblock print. The modern road follows the river valley while the old footpath crosses Magome Pass (790m). A meditative low-elevation ride through forested mountain country.

The route.
NakatsugawaStart · Start in Nakatsugawa, southern entry to the historic Kiso Valley. The Edo-era post road begins climbing into the mountains. Fuel up before the valley.
Magome-jukuScenic Point · Stone-paved post town preserved on a steep hillside. Cars excluded from the main street — park at the lower lot and walk up. Try the gohei-mochi (skewered rice cake with miso glaze) at any of the open shops.
Magome Pass (790m)Mountain Pass · Forested pass between Magome and Tsumago. The original Edo footpath crosses higher up — riders take the lower modern road. Cedar groves and bear bells along the trail.
Tsumago-jukuScenic Point · Best-preserved Edo post town in Japan. No telephone wires, no signs above doorways, no vending machines visible. Walk the 600m main street. The Honjin (chief inn) and Waki-honjin are open as museums.
NagisoRestaurant · Stop in Nagiso for soba — the cold mountain water and acidic soil make this Japan's soba heartland. Mountain village charm without the tourists of Magome/Tsumago.
Kakizore GorgeScenic Point · Granite gorge with turquoise pools fed by clear Kiso River tributaries. Easy walking trail downstream from Atera. Cool relief on a hot summer day.
Kiso-FukushimaEnd · End in Kiso-Fukushima, central Kiso Valley town. Historic Edo-period samurai checkpoint (Sekisho) preserved as museum. Return to Nagoya/Tokyo by JR Chuo line train.
