The Nakasendo was the inland Edo-period highway connecting Tokyo to Kyoto, parallel to the coastal Tokaido. The Kiso Valley section preserves the most atmospheric stretch of post towns anywhere in Japan — Magome and Tsumago — where stone-paved streets, no telephone wires, and 17th-century inns transport the rider into a Hokusai woodblock print. The modern road follows the river valley while the old footpath crosses Magome Pass (790m). A meditative low-elevation ride through forested mountain country.
