The Tsugaru Peninsula is Honshu's northernmost finger, pointing across the stormy Tsugaru Strait towards Hokkaido. Apple orchard country in the south gives way to wild, windswept coastline in the north. Cape Tappi marks the northernmost accessible point of Honshu — across the 23km strait you can see Hokkaido on clear days. The route passes the brackish Lake Jūsan-ko, a major wetland for migratory birds, and ends in Aomori — city of the legendary Nebuta Festival.
