The Tsugaru Peninsula is Honshu's northernmost finger, pointing across the stormy Tsugaru Strait towards Hokkaido. Apple orchard country in the south gives way to wild, windswept coastline in the north. Cape Tappi marks the northernmost accessible point of Honshu — across the 23km strait you can see Hokkaido on clear days. The route passes the brackish Lake Jūsan-ko, a major wetland for migratory birds, and ends in Aomori — city of the legendary Nebuta Festival.

GoshogawaraStart · Start in Goshogawara. The Tachineputa Museum houses 23-metre-tall float lanterns used in August's festival — less crowded than Aomori's famous Nebuta but equally spectacular. Fuel up before heading north.
Lake Jusan-ko WetlandsScenic Point · Brackish lagoon separated from the Sea of Japan by a narrow sand bar. One of Japan's most important wetland sites for migratory swans and ducks. The flat coastal road here is arrow-straight and hauntingly empty.
Cape Tappi LighthousePhoto Spot · Northernmost accessible point of Honshu. On clear days the hills of Hokkaido are visible 23km north across the Tsugaru Strait — the same channel the Seikan Tunnel burrows beneath. Fierce winds, dramatic cliffs, total solitude.

Aomori CityEnd · End in Aomori. The Nebuta Museum WA-RASSE on the waterfront is excellent in the evening. Try Tsugaru-style ramen — thick pork-bone broth with sweet soy — at any local ramen-ya.
