The Shimokita Peninsula juts north from Aomori into the Tsugaru Strait. Its interior holds Osorezan — the active volcanic caldera where sulfur vents and the acidic Lake Usori create a landscape Buddhism identifies as the entrance to the underworld. The northern tip at Cape Oma is the absolute northernmost point of Honshu, just 17km from Hokkaido, and the source of Japan's most expensive bluefin tuna. A 140km circuit combining two of Tohoku's most memorable experiences.

MutsuStart · Start in Mutsu city. Fuel up here — limited service stations on the peninsula interior. Head west on Route 279 through pine forest toward the Osorezan caldera.
Osorezan — Gateway to the UnderworldScenic Point · An active volcanic caldera and one of Japan's three most sacred mountains. Sulfur vents steam around the shores of Lake Usori, whose acidic water supports no fish. White sand beaches and eerie rock formations reinforce the Buddhist belief that this is where souls gather before the afterlife. Bodai-ji Temple (founded 862 AD) stands at the entrance. Open late April–early November.
Cape Oma — Northernmost HonshuPhoto Spot · The northernmost tip of all Honshu island. A monument marks the spot just 17km from Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait. On clear days Hakodate's skyline is visible. The surrounding waters produce Oma bluefin tuna — the world's most expensive, with individual fish selling for millions of yen at Toyosu auction.
Oma Fishing PortRestaurant · Oma's small port is the heart of the Oma tuna trade. Thick-cut maguro sets at quayside restaurants offer exceptional value — toro and akami at a fraction of Tokyo prices. October–March is peak tuna season but summer catches are still outstanding.
