Lake Towada & Oirase Gorge — Aomori Caldera Circuit.
Japan's most celebrated gorge road follows a crystal-clear mountain stream for 14km through ancient beech forest — 12 named waterfalls, mossy rock walls, and blue-green water pooling between the stones. The stream flows from one of Japan's deepest caldera lakes (327m), ringed by dark cedar and beech forest. Peak season is mid-October when autumn colour transforms the gorge into a cathedral of red and gold.

Yakeyama — Gorge East EntranceStart · Eastern entrance to the Oirase Gorge on Route 102. Arrive early — weekend traffic backs up by 10am. A small parking area marks the start of the gorge road.
Kumoi-no-Taki — Oirase StreamScenic Point · One of 12 named waterfalls along the 14km gorge. Mossy rock walls, ancient beech forest, crystal water. The stream never exceeds 11 degrees Celsius even in summer.
Choshi-no-Otaki WaterfallPhoto Spot · The most photographed waterfall in the Oirase — a 7m cascade into emerald-green water. Classic autumn postcard. The road shoulder is narrow; park carefully.
Nenokuchi — Lake Towada ShoreScenic Point · Exit the gorge at Nenokuchi where the Oirase stream begins at the lake outlet. The caldera lake appears suddenly, ringed by dark cedars and beech. The silence after the gorge road is striking.
Lake Towada — Yasumiya Resort AreaRestaurant · South shore resort area with lakeside restaurants. The hinai-jidori chicken set meal is the regional specialty. Boat tours depart from here. Lake visibility exceeds 10m in summer — you can see the bottom clearly.
Towada-ko South Shore ViewpointEnd · Best panoramic view across the 327m-deep caldera lake. The lake holds 8.3 cubic kilometres of snowmelt filtered through volcanic rock. Return via Route 103 over Hakka-Toge Pass (1,084m) for aerial views back into the caldera.
