Okinawa Island Circuit — Naha to Cape Hedo Subtropical Loop.
Okinawa's main island is Japan's subtropical outlier — turquoise water, coral reefs, mangroves, and a distinct Ryukyuan culture entirely separate from mainland Japan. A single long day covers 200km from Naha to Cape Hedo, the northernmost tip, and back via the east coast. The north (Yanbaru) is dense subtropical jungle; the south holds Ryukyuan castle ruins and WWII peace memorials. Best November–April to avoid typhoon season.

Naha — Kokusai-doriStart · Start in Naha. Fuel and breakfast on Kokusai-dori (International Street). Shuri Castle — former seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom, UNESCO-listed — is 2km east if time allows before heading north.
Churaumi Aquarium & Ocean ExpoScenic Point · One of the world's largest aquariums, home to whale sharks and manta rays in a 7.5-million-litre tank. The coastal road approaching from the south is superb — blue water, sugarcane fields, limestone karst outcrops.
Cape HedoPhoto Spot · Northernmost point of Okinawa's main island. Dramatic limestone cliffs where the East China Sea meets the Philippine Sea. On clear days, Yoron Island (Kagoshima Prefecture) is visible 23km north. Windswept, wild, and unlike anything else in Japan.
Yanbaru Subtropical ForestScenic Point · Route 70 cuts through Yanbaru — dense virgin subtropical forest, home to the endangered Okinawa rail (Yanbaru kuina). Mangrove estuaries reach the road. The forest feels entirely unlike the rest of Japan.
Katsuren Castle RuinsPhoto Spot · 13th–15th century Ryukyuan castle perched on a ridge with outstanding views of the Katsuren Peninsula lagoon and causeway islands (UNESCO World Heritage). A 15-minute walk to the top.
NahaEnd · Return to Naha. End with Okinawa soba — thick wheat noodles in clear pork broth — at any local shokudo. The island's defining dish and the perfect close to a subtropical day ride.
