Matsuhime Pass — Otsuki to Okutama over Route 139.
A classic Tokyo-area touge that climbs Route 139 from Otsuki over the 1,250 m Matsuhime Pass toward the mountains of Okutama. Since the 2014 Matsuhime Tunnel opened below, the old pass road is a quiet seasonal viewpoint, while the through route drops to the village of Kosuge and follows the upper Tama valley to Lake Okutama. Cool forest, tight corners and little traffic within two hours of the capital.

OtsukiStart · Start in Otsuki, a road and rail junction about 90 minutes west of Tokyo. Fuel here; there is none over the pass.
Saruhashi BridgePhoto Spot · One of the three great bridges of Japan: a rare cantilevered wooden span leaping the Katsura river gorge with no central piers. Quick stop before the climb.
Matsuhime PassMountain Pass · The old Route 139 summit at 1,250 m, named for a fleeing 16th-century princess. Since the tunnel opened below, the pass road is a seasonal viewpoint, so check for gate closures on the Kosuge side.
KosugeRestaurant · Tiny forest village at the head of the Tama valley. Michi-no-Eki Kosuge serves trout and has an onsen; the through route now uses the Matsuhime Tunnel to reach here.
OkutamaEnd · Follow the upper Tama river past Lake Okutama, the Ogouchi reservoir, into Okutama town on the mountainous western edge of Tokyo, a favourite rider haunt.
