Kirishima Volcanic Highlands — Kagoshima to Ebino Plateau.
A volcanic crossing through the heart of southern Kyushu. Leaving Kagoshima beneath the smoking cone of Sakurajima, the route climbs into the Kirishima range — a cluster of more than twenty volcanoes — past the mythic vermilion shrine of Kirishima Jingu. The Kirishima-Ebino Skyline then sweeps over the 1,200m Ebino Plateau between crater lakes and the slopes of Mt Karakuni before dropping to the highland town of Ebino. Steaming vents, alpine meadows and sweeping volcanic roads.
