Kumamoto to Takachiho Gorge — Valley of the Gods.
An inland pilgrimage from Kumamoto Castle into the mountains of Miyazaki, arriving at Takachiho Gorge — where Japanese mythology says the gods descended to earth. The route climbs through the Aso caldera rim, follows the Gokase River valley, and ends in one of Japan's most sacred and dramatic landscapes. The basalt gorge walls, carved by the Gokase River, rise 80–100m; rowboats let you drift beneath the Manai Falls curtain.

Kumamoto CastleStart · Start at Kumamoto Castle — one of Japan's three premier castles, partially restored after the 2016 earthquake. Fuel up in the city; services get sparse after Aso.
Takamori — South Aso ValleyScenic Point · The south face of the Aso caldera drops steeply into the Takamori valley. Route 325 winds through terraced fields and small farms. The Aso caldera rim is visible as a wall to the north.
Takachiho GorgePhoto Spot · The centrepiece: basalt column walls rising 80–100m above the Gokase River. Rowboats available to drift beneath Manai Falls (a 17m curtain waterfall). Arrive before 2pm to rent a boat before queues build.
Amanoiwato ShrineScenic Point · Japan's most sacred Shinto site — the cave where Amaterasu (the sun goddess) hid, plunging the world into darkness. The shrine is across the Iwato River from the cave itself. Photography restricted near the cave.
Kumamoto CastleEnd · Return to Kumamoto via a different mountain route. The descent from Takachiho on Route 218 west is fast and sweeping — save energy for it. Good tonkotsu ramen in the city for dinner.
