Aso Caldera Panorama Line — Mt Aso Crater & Daikanbo Lookout.

The Aso Caldera is one of the largest in the world (25km north–south) and the Panorama Line traces its crater rim and the active Nakadake summit cone. From Aso city up Daikanbo on the northern outer rim, west along the Milk Road, then up to the active crater of Mt Aso (access depends on volcanic alert level), through the Kusasenri grasslands, and finishing at Takamori in the southern caldera. Iconic Kyushu touring — locals call it Japan's Best Ride.

Aso CityStart · Start in Aso city on the caldera floor. Fuel up — last reliable services before the climb to the rim. Aso Shrine (rebuilt after the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake) is a worthwhile 15-minute stop.

Daikanbo LookoutMountain Pass · Daikanbo (936m) — the highest point of Aso's northern outer rim. 360° panorama: the five central peaks (the Sleeping Buddha silhouette), the caldera floor, and the Kuju Range to the north. Often clearest in early morning before clouds build.

Milk Road RidgeScenic Point · The Milk Road runs along the outer rim ridge from Daikanbo. Open grassland with grazing cattle and dramatic crater views to the south. Quintessential Aso riding — surface is excellent, traffic is light midweek.

Kusasenri GrasslandsScenic Point · Kusasenri at 1,130m — a former volcanic crater now a wide grassland with two ponds and grazing horses. Mt Aso's central peaks frame the view. The classic touring rider photo stop in Kyushu.

Mt Aso Nakadake CraterMountain Pass · Active Nakadake crater rim — sulphur fumes from a still-erupting volcano. Last eruption October 2021. Crater access is by shuttle bus from the closure point and depends on the daily JMA alert level. The crater itself is one of motorcycling's strangest sights.

Aso Panorama Line — South DescentScenic Point · The road descends south from the crater into the Minamiaso caldera floor. Sweeping curves, smooth Kyushu surface. The patchwork of southern caldera farmland comes into view as you drop.
