Shikoku Cape Muroto — Kochi Pacific Outer Coast.
Route 55 follows Shikoku's south-facing Pacific coast from Kochi to Cape Muroto — a wild promontory where Kukai (Kobo Daishi, founder of Shingon Buddhism) is said to have achieved enlightenment in a cliffside cave. The cape is a designated UNESCO Geopark; submarine currents bring nutrient-rich water to the surface here, which is why Kochi's famous katsuo no tataki (bonito sashimi) is the best in Japan. Dramatic volcanic rock shorelines, nesting sea turtles in summer, and almost no traffic.

Kochi Castle & Hirome IchibaStart · Start at Kochi. The Hirome Ichiba covered market opens early — best katsuo tataki (seared bonito) breakfast in Japan. Kochi Castle (original tenshu intact) is 5 minutes away. Head east on Route 55.
Aki City — Tosa Bay CoastScenic Point · R55 tracks Tosa Bay with the Pacific stretching south. Aki is a castle town surrounded by greenhouse cultivation — tomatoes and yuzu citrus. The coast road has almost no development east of here.
Nahari — Muroto-Anan CoastScenic Point · The road enters the Muroto-Anan Quasi-National Park. Loggerhead sea turtles nest on the beaches May–August. The estuary at Nahari is a good pull-off for wildlife spotting. No fuel for 50km after this.
Muroto Skyline ViewpointPhoto Spot · The road climbs above the cape giving aerial views of the Pacific horizon in three directions. The Kuroshio Current swells are visible as a colour shift in the sea — deep indigo where the warm current runs close to shore.
Cape Muroto — GeoparkPhoto Spot · The cape itself: UNESCO Geopark protecting the exposed submarine geology thrust above sea level by tectonic uplift. The 'Pillow Lava' outcrops are 170 million years old. Kukai's enlightenment cave (Mikurodo) is a short walk from the lighthouse.
Muroto City — Onsen & PortEnd · End in Muroto City. An oceanfront hot spring lets you soak while watching the Pacific. The small port town is the supply hub for deep-sea fishing boats; fresh dolphin fish (shiira) and swordfish are sold from the dock.
