A motorcycle pilgrimage through the UNESCO World Heritage sacred mountains of southern Nara — 30,000 wild cherry trees on Yoshinoyama, Japan's second-largest wooden temple at Kinpusen-ji, and the ancient hot spring village of Dorogawa at the foot of Mount Omine. Living Shinto and Buddhist tradition on beautiful mountain roads. Best in mid-April for cherry blossoms.

Yoshino StationStart · Start at Yoshino, approached from Kashihara or Yamato-Yagi on valley roads. The mountain road climbs immediately from the valley floor. Park thoughtfully — the approach road is narrow.

Yoshinoyama — Kami SenbonScenic Point · 30,000 wild cherry trees cover four altitude zones from the valley to the ridge. The upper grove (Kami Senbon) is least-visited and most beautiful. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. Peak bloom in mid-April.

Kinpusen-ji TemplePhoto Spot · Japan's second-largest wooden structure. The Zao-do main hall contains three towering secret Buddhas unveiled publicly only once per year in spring. Views over the Kii Peninsula's endless ridge system from the 858m summit.

Dorogawa OnsenRestaurant · Sacred hot spring village at the foot of Mount Omine (1,719m), highest peak in the Kii range. A pilgrimage destination for 1,300 years. Try kaki-no-ha sushi — fish pressed in persimmon leaves, unique to this valley. The Nishi-no-taki waterfall is a short walk.

Tenkawa Benzaiten ShrineScenic Point · Remote mountain shrine on the Tenkawa River banks surrounded by ancient cedar. One of Japan's three great Benzaiten shrines. Beloved by musicians and traditional artists — votive offerings from famous performers line the inner sanctum.
