Overview

Yatsugatake Highlands — Suwa to Kiyosato.

The volcanic Yatsugatake range forms the central spine between Nagano and Yamanashi prefectures. This route traverses the range from the sacred Lake Suwa via the birch-forested Tateshina Plateau and Japan's second-highest national highway pass (Mugikusa Pass, 2,127m on Route 299) to the pastoral Kiyosato Highlands. Adjacent but distinct from the Venus Line — this is the eastern approach through denser montane forest and volcanic terrain.

ROUTE
6 stops
Start
Lake SuwaStart · Start beside Lake Suwa, a sacred lake in the heart of the Japanese Alps. In winter the lake freezes and forms the Omiwatari cracks — a Shinto omen attributed to the gods crossing between two shrines. The lake promenade is a pleasant warm-up before the mountain roads begin.
Scenic
Tateshina PlateauScenic Point · Birch-forested volcanic plateau between 1,000 and 1,900m. Ranch cafes, highland pasture, and clear views of the Yatsugatake volcanic peaks. August wildflowers carpet the open meadows. One of central Japan's most underrated riding areas.
Photo
Shirakaba LakePhoto Spot · Mountain resort lake ringed by white birch trees — shirakaba means white birch. The gold autumn foliage reflected in the lake has been a Japanese landscape painting subject for generations. Good coffee stops in the resort village.
Pass
Mugikusa Pass — 2127mMountain Pass · Japan's second-highest national highway pass on Route 299. Above the treeline, the summit landscape shifts to alpine tundra. Views north across the Tateshina peaks. Usually snow-free only June–October — check conditions before riding in shoulder seasons.
Scenic
Kiyosato HighlandsScenic Point · High pastoral plateau at 1,100m beneath Yatsugatake's southern peaks. The Suntory Hakushu Whisky Distillery is 15 minutes south — distillery tours available. Farm-to-table restaurants serve outstanding fresh milk and mountain vegetables.
End
KobuchizawaEnd · End at Kobuchizawa on the JR Chuo Line. Mount Fuji appears to the southeast on clear days. Easy return to Tokyo by Limited Express (about 1hr 20min). Good soba restaurants in the station area.
