Venus Line — Nagano Highland Plateau Drive.
The Venus Line is a 76km highland scenic road traversing the Yatsugatake foothills and the Utsukushigahara plateau in central Nagano. The road runs at 1,400–2,000m for nearly its entire length, crossing alpine meadows, birch forests, and grassland highlands with views of the Northern, Central, and Southern Japanese Alps. Best from late June (when the road fully opens) through mid-October. The Nikko-kisuge day-lily bloom in mid-July at Kirigamine is one of Japan's great floral spectacles.

ChinoStart · Start in Chino at the southern Suwa basin. Fuel up — limited stations on the highland route. Head north onto Route 152 toward the Tateshina highlands.
Lake ShirakabaScenic Point · Birch-fringed alpine lake at 1,400m. Quiet at dawn with mist often hovering above the water. Classic Nagano plateau scene.
Kirigamine Plateau (1,925m)Mountain Pass · The road's high meadow. Yashimagahara Marsh nearby. The Nikko-kisuge day-lily blooms in early–mid July, carpeting the plateau in orange.
Utsukushigahara Plateau (Bijodaira, 2,034m)Scenic Point · 'Beautiful Highland'. Open meadows at 2,000m with grazing cattle. The 360° view takes in the Northern Alps, Yatsugatake, and Mt Fuji on clear days.
Utsukushigahara Open-Air MuseumPhoto Spot · Sculpture park at 2,000m — 350 contemporary works set in the alpine meadow. Surreal: bronze figures against the Japanese Alps. Closed November–April (snow).
Suwa LakeRestaurant · Descend to Lake Suwa. Try unagi (eel) — Suwa is one of Japan's top freshwater eel regions. The lake hosts winter Omiwatari ice ridges in cold years.
