Dewa Sanzan — Yamagata's Sacred Three Mountains.
A mountain pilgrimage loop through the three sacred peaks of Dewa, the spiritual heart of the Yamabushi mountain ascetics. From the castle town of Tsuruoka the road climbs to Mount Haguro with its towering cedar avenue and five-story pagoda, then up toward Mount Gassan, highest of the three, and the deeply sacred Mount Yudono. Cool forest roads, ancient shrines, and a genuine sense of the old, mystical Japan.

The route.
TsuruokaStart · Former castle town and gateway to the three mountains. Fuel up; mountain roads have few services.
Mount HaguroScenic Point · Lowest and most accessible of the three peaks. A 2,446-step stone avenue of ancient cedars leads past a National Treasure five-story pagoda.
Mount GassanMountain Pass · Highest of the three at 1,984m. The Gassan road climbs toward the 8th station through alpine meadows — snow lingers into summer.
Mount YudonoScenic Point · The most sacred and secretive of the three. Photography is forbidden at the inner shrine; "tell nothing of what you see here".
TsuruokaEnd · Return loop to Tsuruoka. Try shojin ryori (Buddhist pilgrim cuisine) to end the day.
