Overview

Via Aurelia — Tuscany Coast.

SS1 from Livorno to Grosseto along the Tyrrhenian coast — headlands, Etruscan ruins, the Maremma nature reserve, wine estates, and small harbour towns. The Italian coastal drive that isn't the Amalfi and is better for it: no tour buses, no tourist signage, just the sea and the road.

ROUTE
7 stops
Start
LivornoStart · The working port city of Tuscany — not a tourist destination but entirely authentic. The Mercato Centrale for a market breakfast, then south on the SS1 as the coast road begins.
Scenic
CastiglioncelloScenic Point · A clifftop headland village with Aleppo pines above the Tyrrhenian. Historically the summer colony of Italian film and literary figures. Clear water visible far below the cliffs.
Photo
Bolgheri Cypress AvenuePhoto Spot · The 5-km-long perfectly straight cypress-lined avenue leading to Bolgheri village — one of the most iconic images in all of Italy, immortalised by Giosuè Carducci's poem. The village produces Sassicaia, one of Italy's greatest wines.
Scenic
Populonia & San SilvestroScenic Point · An Etruscan acropolis on a headland above the Golfo di Baratti. The iron-smelting ruins below at San Silvestro date to 700 BC and are preserved in an archaeological park directly visible from the road.
Scenic
Punta Ala MarinaScenic Point · An exclusive sailing marina hidden in a pine forest — the kind of place Italians go for summer holidays and foreigners never find. The Argentario peninsula is visible across the bay to the south.
Scenic
Parco della Maremma ViewpointScenic Point · The road skirtsthe edge of the Maremma Natural Park — wild horses, long-horn Maremmana cattle, and the Uccellina mountains visible behind the coastal dunes. This is the wildest coastal section.
End
GrossetoEnd · The Maremma capital within perfectly intact 16th-century hexagonal walls. The walls are designed for promenading — the evening passeggiata on the rampart walkway is a local institution.
