Jaufenpass (Passo di Monte Giovo).
Connecting Sterzing/Vipiteno and Merano/Meran at 2,094 m through South Tyrol — tight hairpins on the north face, sweeping curves on the south, all in a landscape of Austrian-influenced villages and Italian vineyards. Often overlooked in favour of the Stelvio; equally dramatic, a fraction of the traffic.

The route.
Vipiteno / SterzingStart · A perfectly preserved medieval market town at the foot of the Jaufen on the Brenner road. The Gothic Zwölferturm tower dates to 1470. Fuel up and exit west on the SS44 toward San Leonardo.
San Leonardo in PassiriaScenic Point · The Passeier valley village at the foot of the climb. Andreas Hofer — the Tyrolean freedom fighter — was born here in 1767. The museum is worth 20 minutes. The road narrows and steepens above the village.
North Face HairpinsScenic Point · The north face of the Jaufen has the tighter, more technical hairpins — often described as "Stelvio-like" but with no tour buses. The road quality is excellent.
Jaufenpass SummitMountain Pass · 2,094 m — a simple stone cross and a mountain hut at the summit. The views north to the Stubai Alps and south into the Etschtal are both exceptional. The gradient on the Merano side is longer and more sweeping.
Schenna / ScenaScenic Point · A vine-terraced hillside village above Merano with a medieval castle. The transition from alpine to Mediterranean vegetation happens visibly over the final 10 km — palm trees appear in Merano.
Merano / MeranEnd · An elegant Belle Époque spa resort in a sheltered micro-climate so mild that palms grow in the municipal promenade. The thermal baths, the passeggiata, and a glass of Gewürztraminer close the day perfectly.
