Gavia (2,621 m) is one of the highest paved passes in the Alps and among the most dramatic. The northern approach from Ponte di Legno is a narrow, steep single-track in places — originally built for military mule carts. The southern descent into Bormio is barely wider. There are no guardrails on significant sections and the drop is serious. The reward is an absolutely untouched alpine environment: no tourist infrastructure, near silence.
