Lago di Como — SS340 Western Shore.
The SS340 along the western shore of Lake Como from Como to Colico — tunnels blasted through cliff faces, village piazzas at water level, and the most cinematic lakeside riding in Italy. The road narrows to a single lane in places with the lake on one side and rock overhang on the other.

The route.
ComoStart · The city at the southern tip of the lake's western arm. Fuel up before departing north on the SS340. The silk industry that built Como's wealth is visible in the textile mills on the outskirts.
CernobbioScenic Point · The Villa d'Este — the most famous grand hotel on the lake — commands the hillside above the town. The cypress-lined villa entrance is visible from the water. The road first enters the cliff-tunnel sections here.
ArgegnoScenic Point · A tiny harbour village where the Intelvi valley road departs toward Switzerland. The view from the main piazza encompasses both arms of the Y-shaped lake simultaneously — the only place this is possible.
Tremezzo — Villa CarlottaPhoto Spot · A neoclassical villa with terraced Italian gardens descending directly to the lake. The azalea blooms in April are extraordinary. The garden is open to the public; the road passes directly between the gate and the water.
MenaggioRestaurant · The most developed lakeside town on this stretch — ferry connections to Bellagio and Varenna, good restaurants on the lungolago, and a gelato tradition dating to 1920. An excellent mid-route stop.
GravedonaScenic Point · A lakeside village with a Romanesque basilica (Santa Maria del Tiglio, 12th century) and the last village market of real character before the lake widens.
ColicoEnd · Northern terminus of the western shore road. The Pian di Spagna nature reserve is 3 km west. The Stelvio Pass is 55 km northeast — an obvious next-day extension if you're doing the full Alpine circuit.
