Italy is a motorcyclist's paradise, offering an extraordinary range of riding experiences from the dramatic hairpins of the Dolomites and Stelvio Pass corridor to the sun-drenched curves of the Amalfi Coast. The Trentino-Alto Adige region alone contains some of Europe's most celebrated passes, while Tuscany delivers rolling hills and medieval hilltop towns connected by quiet, perfectly surfaced roads.
The best riding season runs from May through October, though southern regions like Sicily and Sardinia can be ridden comfortably year-round. Italian mountain passes above 2,000 metres typically open in June and close by late October depending on snowfall. Fuel stations are plentiful but close early on Sundays in rural areas — plan accordingly.
Italian drivers are accustomed to motorcycles and lane filtering is legal and expected. Toll motorways (autostrada) accept motorcycles at reduced rates, but the real riding is on the free provincial roads (strade provinciali) that wind through valleys and over passes.
