The Hill Cart Road climbs 2,000m in 80km from the Siliguri plains through sculpted tea gardens to the colonial hill station of Darjeeling, where Kanchenjunga dominates the skyline on clear mornings. The route passes the famous Batasia spiral of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway toy train and ends at Tiger Hill — the highest viewpoint, where pre-dawn arrivals can see Kanchenjunga and, rarely, Everest glow in the first light.
