Clarence Drive (the R44) hugs the cliffs of False Bay between Gordon's Bay and Kleinmond — one of the world's great coastal roads, repeatedly compared to California's Big Sur and the Amalfi Coast. The tar is blasted into the mountainside high above the Atlantic, with whale sightings below in season, an African penguin colony at Betty's Bay, and the fynbos of the Kogelberg Biosphere all the way.

Gordon's BayStart · Start at Gordon's Bay harbour on the eastern shore of False Bay. Fuel up — the R44 clings to the cliffs from here with no services until Rooiels.
Kogel Bay & Steenbras CliffsScenic Point · The R44 is blasted into the mountainside high above Kogel Bay — the most dramatic stretch, with sheer drops to the Atlantic. Whales breach here Jun–Nov.
