Waterberg Plateau Loop — Bela-Bela to Vaalwater.
Two days into the Waterberg plateau, one of South Africa's most underrated Big 5 wilderness areas in Limpopo Province. The loop passes Nylsvley's 415-species birdlife, ancient hominid fossil sites at Makapansgat, and Marakele National Park's Cape Vulture colony, where 800 breeding pairs nest on cliff faces above elephant and black rhino country.

Bela-Bela (Warmbaths)Start · Start in Bela-Bela, named for the natural hot spring that bubbles up here. The Waterberg plateau rises to the northwest. Head out on the R516 toward Vaalwater.
Nylsvley Nature ReserveScenic Point · The Nyl River floodplain is one of southern Africa's most important bird habitats — 415 species recorded. Seasonal flooding attracts up to 60,000 waterbirds. Morning light is extraordinary.
MokopaneScenic Point · Historic Limpopo town. The Makapansgat Caves 15km east contain hominid fossils dated 2.8–3.5 million years ago — among the oldest archaeological sites in Africa.
VaalwaterOvernight · Overnight in Vaalwater — the heart of the Waterberg. Private game lodges offer excellent accommodation. Leopard, cheetah, and African wild dog are all present in the surrounding reserves.
Marakele National ParkScenic Point · A gravel road runs through the park. The Lenong viewpoint overlooks one of Africa's largest Cape Vulture colonies (800+ breeding pairs) nesting on cliff faces. Elephant and black rhino are resident.
Waterberg Plateau ViewPhoto Spot · The forested plateau rises above the surrounding bushveld. The dense ancient forest feels primeval — Africa before fences and cattle. Birding here is exceptional.
ThabazimbiFuel Stop · Iron ore mining town on the southern edge of the Waterberg. Fuel, food, and the last services before the return run south to Bela-Bela.
Bela-Bela (Warmbaths)End · Return to Bela-Bela. The natural hot spring pools are an excellent finish after two days of mixed-surface riding through the Waterberg plateau.
