A high-mountain loop through Vietnam's most spectacular rice terrace landscape. Highway 32 climbs from Nghia Lo valley through Tu Le sticky-rice country, over the legendary Khau Pha Pass, and into the Mu Cang Chai district where 500-year-old Hmong terraces staircase down entire mountainsides. Best ridden in September–October harvest season.

ROUTE

Nghia LoStart · Start in Nghia Lo — a Thai ethnic minority market town in a wide valley. Fuel up here and at the first station in Tu Le; the pass road has nothing. Early start recommended — morning mist in the valleys is spectacular.

Tu Le ValleyScenic Point · Famous for its black sticky rice grown by the Thai minority — the valley floor is a geometric patchwork of flooded paddies. The village market (Tuesdays and Fridays) is one of the most authentic hill-tribe markets in northern Vietnam.

Khau Pha PassMountain Pass · One of Vietnam's four great mountain passes at 1,200 m — the road clings to the ridge with near-vertical drops on both sides. On clear mornings the terraces below fill with mist and the mountain peaks above emerge from cloud. Cold and wet; pack a layer.

Mu Cang Chai TownRestaurant · Small Hmong market town in the middle of the terrace district. Eat at one of the guesthouses — simple rice and pork dishes. This is also where you hire a local guide if exploring the village tracks beyond the main road.

La Pan Tan TerracesPhoto Spot · The most photogenic terrace area in the district — entire mountainsides carved into water-filled steps reflecting the sky. A dirt track leads 6 km from the main road to the best overlook viewpoint.
