Dong HoiStart · Start from Dong Hoi on the central coast. Fuel up here — the national park road has no stations. The route west on HW20 passes through rice paddies before entering the karst foothills.
Phong Nha CavePhoto Spot · The main cave is accessed by boat on the Son River through a 300 m illuminated entrance chamber. The stalactite formations inside are extraordinary. Buy tickets at the Son Trach wharf (30 min boat ride each way). Arrive before 10 am to avoid tour groups.
Paradise Cave — Thien DuongScenic Point · Discovered in 2005, this is one of the largest dry caves in Asia — 31 km long, with a cathedral-scale main passage 150 m wide and 80 m high. The 1 km boardwalk through the cave takes 45 minutes. Otherworldly.
Ho Chi Minh Highway — Jungle SectionScenic Point · The western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway cuts through the heart of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park — dense jungle, limestone peaks, zero traffic. This is the road that supplied the south during the Vietnam War. Watch for bomb crater ponds beside the road.
Dong HoiEnd · Return to Dong Hoi on the riverside valley road (HW20). The late afternoon light on the karst towers is exceptional. The beach at Nhat Le is 3 km from the city centre for a sunset swim.
