The Hai Van Pass (Đèo Hải Vân — Ocean Cloud Pass) divides Vietnam's climate zones at 496m: south is sunny Da Nang, north is misty Hue. Made globally famous by Top Gear in 2008, this 20km mountain crossing with sweeping hairpins above the East Sea is the most celebrated road in Southeast Asia. The route continues via Lang Co's extraordinary lagoon isthmus to Hue — Vietnam's last imperial capital.

Da NangStart · Start in Da Nang. Rent a motorbike from any shop in the Old Quarter — a semi-automatic 110cc Honda is the traditional choice. Fuel up; check tyre pressure.
Marble Mountains — Ngũ Hành SơnPhoto Spot · Five marble and limestone hills south of Da Nang, riddled with Buddhist cave temples and war-era tunnels. The Thuy Son peak has a cannon-hole blasted by a US airstrike — a bizarre natural viewfinder for the coast you're about to ride.
Hai Van Pass Summit (496m)Mountain Pass · Vietnam's most famous road. Old French Fort and US-era bunkers line the summit ridge. On a clear morning, Da Nang Bay to the south and Lang Co Lagoon to the north are simultaneously visible. Clouds often sit at pass level — riding into mist is an experience. Lang Co LagoonPhoto Spot · One of the most beautiful coastal scenes in Vietnam: a 10km sand spit with the East Sea on one side and a serene fishing lagoon on the other. The road runs along this thin isthmus. Seafood shacks sell clams, shrimp, and fresh fish for almost nothing.
Lang Co — Seafood LunchRestaurant · Lunch at a lagoon-side seafood restaurant. Order bún bò Huế — Hue-style spicy beef noodle soup, richer and more complex than southern phở. Last comfortable food stop before Hue.
Hue Imperial CitadelScenic Point · The Forbidden Purple City within the Imperial Citadel — Vietnam's last royal capital until 1945. Yellow walls, ornamental gates, and moat-ringed ramparts. Rent a cyclo to cover the citadel grounds at pace.
HueEnd · End in Hue. The city is famous for royal cuisine — delicate dishes served in many small portions. Bún bò Huế for dinner. Trains south to Da Nang (2.5h) or north toward Hanoi depart from Hue station.
