Tamhini Ghat & Mulshi Lake — Pune Western Ghats Monsoon Loop.
A 1-day Western Ghats loop from Pune that every Indian biker has on their list. The road skirts Mulshi Lake reservoir, plunges through Tamhini Ghat — a hairpin descent with 27 seasonal waterfalls visible during the monsoon — to the Konkan foothills at Bhira, then climbs back via the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. Best Jun–Sep for the cascades, but slippery; Oct–Feb for grip and visibility.

The route.
PuneStart · Start in Pune. Leave by 6:30am to clear city traffic. Tamhini is a famous monsoon ride (Jun–Sep) but slippery — Oct–Feb gives you grip and the cascades still trickle.
PirangutFuel Stop · Last reliable fuel station before the ghat. The highway widens here, then narrows again.
Mulshi DamScenic Point · 1927 hydropower dam on the Mula river. Backwaters extend for 50km. Look for kingfishers and otters in the early morning.
Mulshi Lake ViewPhoto Spot · The road skirts the reservoir. Every bend is a postcard in monsoon — slow down and stop wherever you can pull off safely.
Tamhini Ghat StartScenic Point · The famous twisty descent begins. Tight hairpins through dense Western Ghats forest. Cover up — monkeys throw stones occasionally.
Tamhini WaterfallsPhoto Spot · Cluster of seasonal cascades right next to the road. Walk down 100m for the main fall — locally called Devkund. Big crowds on monsoon weekends.
BhiraRestaurant · Small village at the foot of the ghat. Konkani thali and fresh fish curry at a roadside dhaba. Tata Power dam visible from town.
KoladScenic Point · Whitewater-rafting town on the Kundalika river. Optional half-hour rafting run if you've got time and an extra dry bag.
PuneEnd · Climb back via NH-548 and the Mumbai–Pune Expressway. End in Pune; misal pav for dinner on FC Road.
