Bogotá to Villavicencio — Descent to the Llanos.
One of Colombia's great descents: from the cold 2,640m savanna of Bogotá the road drops more than 2,000m through páramo, cloud forest and the dramatic canyon of the Río Negro to the tropical plains city of Villavicencio, gateway to the vast Llanos grasslands. A short but intense ride of tunnels, viaducts and switchbacks with a huge climate change from top to bottom.

The route.
BogotáStart · Start cold and high at 2,640m. Fuel up and dress warm — you'll shed layers as you drop toward the plains. Take the Autopista al Llano south.
ChipaqueScenic Point · First town past the páramo lip. The savanna gives way to green folded ridges as the real descent begins.
CáquezaScenic Point · Bustling market town midway down. The air is warmer and thicker here — a good pause before the canyon section.
GuayabetalPhoto Spot · Clinging to the wall of the deep Río Negro canyon. The old road's switchbacks and the newer tunnels and viaducts make this the scenic climax of the descent.
VillavicencioEnd · End at 467m in hot, humid Villavicencio — the capital of Meta and gateway to the Llanos. Cattle country, joropo music and grilled mamona beef.
