Overview

Serra dos Órgãos Loop — Rio de Janeiro Imperial Circuit.

A 215km triangle from Rio de Janeiro through two mountain cities defined by Brazil's imperial past. The BR-040 climbs the Serra on sweeping hairpins to Petrópolis — the former summer capital of the Brazilian Empire, where Gothic cathedrals and royal palaces sit at 840m in crisp mountain air. The BR-495 continues to Teresópolis through the Serra dos Órgãos National Park, where dramatic granite spires shaped like organ pipes tower over cloud forest. Return via BR-116. Three distinct moods — tropical coast, imperial mountain town, wild granite peaks — all within a single day from one of the world's great cities.

ROUTE

Start
Rio de JaneiroStart · Start at Centro or Zona Sul. Take the BR-040 toward Petrópolis — the climb begins at Corrêas with 15km of sweeping hairpins rising 700m. Leave before 8am to clear the morning commuter traffic on the serra ascent road.
Scenic
PetrópolisScenic Point · The summer capital of the Brazilian Empire at 840m. The Gothic Catedral São Pedro de Alcântara holds the tombs of Emperor Dom Pedro II and Empress Teresa Cristina. The Palácio Imperial displays the imperial crown, throne, and royal carriages. The crisp mountain air after Rio's heat is immediately striking.
Photo
TeresópolisPhoto Spot · Gateway to the Serra dos Órgãos National Park — named for its organ-pipe granite spires. The Dedo de Deus (God's Finger) peak at 1,651m is visible from the road and is Brazil's most iconic rock face. The BR-495 mountain road between Petrópolis and Teresópolis is excellent, twisty riding through cloud forest.
End
Rio de JaneiroEnd · Return to Rio via BR-116 (Rodovia Presidente Dutra). Arrive in time for sunset over Guanabara Bay from Santa Teresa or Mirante Dona Marta — one of the world's great urban viewpoints. Total loop approximately 215km.
