Overview

Costa Verde — Rio de Janeiro to Paraty via Angra dos Reis.

The BR-101 between Rio de Janeiro and Paraty is one of South America's great coastal drives — 260km of Atlantic Forest cliffs dropping into bays full of islands. The Serra do Mar mountains rise straight from the sea; the road threads between them and the surf. Paraty itself is a 17th-century gold-rush port preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site, cobbled streets so uneven cars are banned. Easy gentle ride; best on a weekday to avoid Rio weekend traffic.
