Deep in central Shikoku, the Iya Valley was a hideout for defeated Heike clan warriors in the 12th century — and feels nearly that remote today. Narrow one-lane mountain roads thread above the turquoise Iya River through one of Japan's most secluded gorges. The hand-built kazurabashi vine bridges — strung from actinidia vines and replaced every three years — still cross the river. Pair with the dramatic Oboke Gorge boat ride on the return.
