A loop through the most sacred mountain of western Japan. Mt Daisen (1,729m) is the highest peak in the Chugoku region and one of Japan's three holy mountains, with the 1,300-year-old Daisen-ji temple clinging to its lower slopes. The Daisen Parkway is a magnificent tree-lined avenue cutting through old-growth beech forest. From the mountain you drop to Sakaiminato — the fishing port where manga master Mizuki Shigeru grew up and where his yokai (folklore monsters) statues line the streets.
