Takayama & Shirakawa-go — Hida UNESCO Village Road.

The Hida region of Gifu Prefecture contains two of Japan's most celebrated historic districts. Takayama's Edo-period merchant quarter is the finest preserved in the country, and Shirakawa-go's Ogimachi village — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is known for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses with steeply pitched thatched roofs built to survive extreme snow loads. The route links them via narrow mountain roads through the Shokawa Valley, then continues north through the quieter Gokayama hamlets before finishing in Kanazawa on the Sea of Japan coast.

Takayama Old TownStart · Start in Takayama's Sanmachi Suji — three lanes of perfectly preserved Edo-era sake brewers, craft shops, and morning markets. Fuel up at the town edge before heading north; the mountain roads ahead have limited services.

Hida FurukawaScenic Point · Takayama's quieter sister town, just 15 km north but far less visited. White-walled sake storehouses line the Seto River canal. The road west from here climbs into the wild Shokawa forest on Route 471 — narrow, forested, and superb.

Shirakawa-go OgimachiScenic Point · The centrepiece of the UNESCO Shirakawa-go region: 59 gassho-zukuri farmhouses with 60-degree thatched roofs still inhabited by local families. Arrive before noon to beat the tour buses from Nagoya and Osaka.

Shiroyama Observation DeckPhoto Spot · A 10-minute walk via suspension bridge gives the classic aerial view of Ogimachi's farmhouses arranged among rice paddies and forested mountains. One of Japan's most photographed scenes — best in early morning mist or late afternoon gold light.

Gokayama AinokuraScenic Point · The most atmospheric of the Gokayama hamlets — smaller and quieter than Shirakawa-go, with no tour buses and locals who may invite you in for tea if you stop long enough. The hamlet clusters around a communal hearth in a clearing above the Sho River.
