The Hachimantai Aspite Line is a 27km toll-free alpine highway crossing the Tohoku spine between Iwate and Akita prefectures at 1540m. Famous for an 8m-deep snow corridor when it reopens in late April, the route passes active steam vents, milky thermal ponds, and the flat-topped Mt Hachimantai (1613m). One of northern Japan's most spectacular drives — closed November to late April.
