Onneto & the Akan Volcanoes — Ashoro to Akanko Onsen.
A ride through the volcanic heart of Akan-Mashu National Park, from the paleontology town of Ashoro to the famous hot-spring resort of Akanko Onsen. The route threads deep forest to reach Lake Onneto — a lake at the foot of active Mt Meakan that shifts colour with the light and season — passes the manganese-stained Yunotaki falls and the rustic Meakan (Nonaka) hot spring, then climbs over to Lake Akan, home of the marimo algae and a living Ainu village. Best June to October.
