Karikachi Pass carries National Route 38 over the northern Hidaka Mountains at 644m, linking Minamifurano with Shintoku. Its summit observatory — chosen as one of Japan's eight new scenic views — commands a sweeping panorama across the Tokachi Plain to the distant Daisetsuzan range. A fast, sweeping road much loved by Hokkaido riders, it drops into dairy and soba country around Shintoku. Best June to October; snow can linger October to May.
