Svaneti Mountain Road — Zugdidi to Mestia to Ushguli.

Two days into the most remote inhabited valley in the Caucasus. The road from Zugdidi climbs 130km through the Enguri river gorge to Mestia — a UNESCO World Heritage village of medieval defensive towers at 1,500m. Day 2 continues 45km up to Ushguli, Europe's highest permanently inhabited settlement at 2,200m. For experienced riders only: the surface is mixed concrete and gravel with river crossings possible in spring.

Zugdidi → Mestia

ZugdidiStart · Start in Zugdidi — Samegrelo's largest city. Fuel fully here; stations are scarce in Svaneti. The road follows the Enguri river northeast into the Greater Caucasus.

Enguri River GorgeScenic Point · The gorge deepens dramatically as the road climbs. Medieval Svanetian defensive towers begin appearing on ridgelines. The river runs a vivid turquoise green from glacial silt.

MestiaOvernight · Overnight in Mestia — capital of Upper Svaneti at 1,500m. The famous koshki towers dot every family compound. UNESCO World Heritage village. Excellent guesthouses with Svan cuisine and extraordinary local salt-and-herb spice mix.
