A 240km loop from San Pedro de Atacama (2,407m) up to the Chilean altiplano at 4,200m to ride past flamingo-pink salt lagoons and cobalt-blue altitude lakes under volcanoes that span the Bolivian and Argentine borders. Route 23 climbs east through the volcanic stone village of Toconao to the Salar de Atacama (third-largest salt flat on Earth), then ascends to the twin Lagunas Miscanti and Miñiques. Acclimatise in San Pedro for at least 24 hours before riding — soroche (altitude sickness) is real above 4,000m.
