A circuit of Australia's most south-westerly corner through the world-class Margaret River wine region to Cape Leeuwin, where the Indian Ocean officially meets the Southern Ocean. The Caves Road alternative to the highway winds through jarrah forest past cellar doors, limestone caves, and surf beaches. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse (1895) guided ships around Australia's feared Cape route before the Suez Canal. The southwest corner is one of only five Mediterranean-climate regions on Earth — warm dry summers, mild wet winters — producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon.

BusseltonStart · Start in Busselton. The Busselton Jetty — 1.8km, the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere — is worth an early morning walk before heading south. Take Caves Road, not Bussell Highway, for the best riding through jarrah forest and past wineries.

Margaret River TownScenic Point · Commercial centre of Australia's most celebrated wine region. Over 200 cellar doors operate within 30km. The Caves Road corridor passes some of the finest estates: Cullen, Leeuwin, and Voyager. Coffee at a local cafe before continuing south into wine country.

AugustaRestaurant · Small fishing town where the Blackwood River meets Flinders Bay. Fresh marron (freshwater crayfish) and local fish at the town cafe. The estuary at low tide is peaceful — black swans, pelicans, and small fishing boats working the river mouth.

Cape Leeuwin LighthousePhoto Spot · The most south-westerly point of the Australian mainland, where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. The 1895 limestone lighthouse guided ships before the Suez Canal shortened routes. The petrified waterwheel built by lighthouse keepers in 1895 still turns. Guided tower tours run daily — views from the top are spectacular on a clear afternoon.

BusseltonEnd · Return to Busselton via the faster Bussell Highway. Sunset drinks at the jetty. If cellar doors proved persuasive, the Margaret River region has excellent overnight accommodation at every price point — a second day exploring wineries is easy to justify.
