The toll road connecting Vorarlberg and Tyrol over the Silvretta reservoir at 2,036 m — 22 km of immaculate alpine tarmac with a glacier backdrop and a crowd-free atmosphere even in peak season. One of the Alps' most perfectly compact high-altitude roads. Open June to October.

Partenen, VorarlbergStart · The valley village at the foot of the Silvretta toll road. Pay the toll here and the road begins its climb immediately. Fill up in Schruns (10 km back) as there is no fuel above.
Latschau ReservoirScenic Point · The first of three reservoirs on the ascent — the surrounding hydroelectric infrastructure is massive in scale but surprisingly harmonious with the alpine landscape.
Vermunt ReservoirPhoto Spot · A deeper, more dramatic reservoir flanked by steep moraines. The road hugs the shoreline on a narrow ledge — outstanding views back down the valley.
Silvretta Stausee (Bielerhöhe)Mountain Pass · 2,036 m — the Silvretta reservoir with the glacier-capped Silvrettahorn (3,244 m) directly behind it. One of the great alpine views in Vorarlberg. A café and small hotel operate at the water's edge in summer.
Ischgl, TyrolEnd · The descent into the Paznauntal valley ends at Ischgl — Austria's most glamorous ski resort is unrecognisably quiet in summer. Excellent Austrian food and a well-earned Radler.
