Portugal delivers year-round riding across a compact but varied landscape — from the dramatic cliff roads of the Algarve coast and the rolling cork forests of the Alentejo to the mountainous Serra da Estrela in the centre and the lush, green Minho region in the north. The entire country can be toured in a week, making it perfect for shorter European trips.
Portugal's mild Atlantic climate allows comfortable riding in most months. The Algarve is pleasant even in winter (15–18°C), while the north and mountains are best from May through October. Summer in the south can be very hot (40°C+) — ride early and take long afternoon breaks.
Portuguese roads are generally good, with well-surfaced national roads and modern motorways. The toll system uses electronic-only lanes on some highways — register your plate at the border or buy a temporary transponder. Fuel prices are moderate by European standards. The country is small enough that you're never far from the coast, a mountain, or a historic town.
