Overview

Serra da Estrela — Torre Summit Road.

The N338 climbs to Torre at 1,993 m — the highest point in mainland Portugal — through glacial valley scenery of ice-carved corrie lakes and granite boulders. Snow from November to April; wildflower meadows in summer; zero crowds year-round. The only place in Portugal where snow is guaranteed.

ROUTE
6 stops
Start
CovilhãStart · The "wool city" at the foot of the Serra da Estrela — Portugal's textile industrial heritage is visible in the converted mills. Fuel up here before the summit road.
Scenic
Penhas da SaúdeScenic Point · A mountain resort village at 1,500 m — ski facilities in winter, fresh air and wildflowers in summer. The road quality changes here as the final climb begins.
Scenic
Lagoa CompridaScenic Point · The largest glacial lake in Portugal, set in a bowl of ancient granite. The water is dark and cold even in August. The landscape above here becomes completely lunar — bare granite hummocks and plateau.
Pass
Torre SummitMountain Pass · 1,993 m — the highest point in mainland Portugal. A former military tower and weather station mark the summit. On clear days, both the Atlantic and the Spanish meseta are visible. In July, wildflowers carpet the plateau; in January, deep snow fills the hollows.
Food
SabugueiroRestaurant · The highest village in Portugal at 1,050 m — famous for smoked sausages (chouriça da Serra) and the local sheep's cheese (queijo da Serra da Estrela, the most prized cheese in the country). The village café sells both.
End
SeiaEnd · The western gateway town of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park — a complete services town with fuel, restaurants, and a good regional museum covering the geology and pastoral history of the mountain.
