Baviaanskloof Wilderness Route — Patensie to Willowmore.
A 210km traverse of the Baviaanskloof World Heritage Site — a remote river gorge through the Eastern Cape fold mountains. The tar ends after Patensie; from there it's gravel, river crossings, and absolute wilderness. Leopard, Cape mountain zebra, and baboon are common. No phone signal, no fuel, no services for 120km. One of the most rewarding adventure rides in southern Africa.

PatensieStart · Gateway to the Baviaanskloof. Fill fuel tanks and water bottles — the kloof has no services for 120km. Named "baboon gorge" by the original Khoekhoe inhabitants.
Baviaanskloof Poort EntryScenic Point · The tar ends and the limestone cliffs close in dramatically. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's 8 centres of plant diversity. Rock hyraxes sun on the cliffs above.
Groot River GorgePhoto Spot · The road follows the Groot River through towering sandstone gorge walls. Several shallow river crossings begin in this section — rubber boots are useful.
Mid-Kloof River CrossingsMechanical · The deepest crossing section. Water levels vary — impassable Nov–Feb after heavy rains. A 4WD adventure bike is strongly recommended. Check levels at Patensie before departing.
Baviaanskloof Wilderness CampOvernight · Overnight at a CapeNature campsite deep in the kloof. No electricity or phone signal. Stars are extraordinary — the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye. This is leopard territory.
Upper Kloof ValleyScenic Point · The valley broadens in the upper section. Spekboom thicket — Africa's most carbon-dense plant community — covers the slopes. Millions of hectares have been restored here in recent decades.
Rietbron VillageFuel Stop · Tiny Karoo hamlet — the only human settlement inside the kloof. Basic supplies available. Last water point before Willowmore.
WillowmoreEnd · End in Willowmore. The Karoo town on the far side feels like re-entering civilisation after the kloof. The local deli does exceptional boerewors rolls.
