Utah SR-9 climbs through Zion Canyon and punches through two tunnels — the larger of which is 1.1 miles long — before emerging on the Colorado Plateau above the canyon rim. The contrast is total: slot-canyon red walls giving way to open desert slickrock in under 30 minutes. One of the most dramatic road transitions in the US.
