Sukhothai Heritage Triangle — Ancient Capitals Circuit.
A circuit connecting three UNESCO World Heritage historical parks in Thailand's central plains — each a capital of a different Siamese kingdom era. Sukhothai, the 13th-century birthplace of Thai civilization, anchors the route. Si Satchanalai to the north preserves the original Sukhothai-era kiln towns amid jungle ruins. Kamphaeng Phet to the south has the most complete surviving ramparts. All three parks are best explored at dawn before heat and tour coaches arrive.

The route.
Sukhothai Historical ParkStart · Start at Sukhothai Historical Park. The 13th-century capital of the first Thai kingdom is a UNESCO site of lotus-pond temple islands and towering Buddha images. Rent a bicycle inside the park and ride the loop before the heat builds. The Ramkhamhaeng National Museum has the original stone inscriptions.
Si Satchanalai Historical ParkPhoto Spot · North of Sukhothai, Si Satchanalai preserves the original satellite capital where the royal kilns that produced the famous Sangkhalok celadon ware operated for two centuries. Khmer-influenced temples rise from jungle undergrowth with almost no other visitors. Far less touristed than the main park.
Kamphaeng Phet Historical ParkScenic Point · South of Sukhothai, the UNESCO park at Kamphaeng Phet has the most complete Sukhothai-era fortification walls — the name means 'Diamond Wall'. The Arunyik forest temples in the forested zone north of the main park are overgrown with atmospheric banyan roots. Fewer tourists than Sukhothai, excellent condition.
Sukhothai Historical ParkEnd · Return to Sukhothai. The night market in the modern city (7km east of the park) has excellent central Thai food. The evening light on the prang towers at the historical park is especially beautiful — worth one more loop of the park before dark.
