A border-ridge day ride from Chiang Rai to the Mekong at Chiang Khong, climbing to two of northern Thailand's most dramatic viewpoints. Phu Chi Fa is the cliff that points at the sky — at dawn in the cool season a sea of mist fills the Lao valleys 1,000m below. The ridge road between Phu Chi Fa and Doi Pha Tang is steep, empty and lined with Hmong villages and wild cherry blossoms in December–February.

ROUTE

Chiang RaiStart · Start in Chiang Rai. Leave early — the ridge road to Phu Chi Fa is best before afternoon haze builds over the Mekong valley.

ThoengFuel Stop · Last full-service town before the mountains. Fuel here — stations on the border ridge are sparse bottle-pump affairs.

Phu Chi Fa ViewpointMountain Pass · The famous cliff that points at the sky (1,628m). A short steep walk from the parking area leads to the knife-edge viewpoint over a sea of Lao mountains. Dec–Feb mornings bring the sea of mist; wild cherry blossoms line the ridge road.

Doi Pha TangScenic Point · Quieter sister viewpoint at 1,645m, 12km along the border ridge. The road between the two summits is the best riding of the day — steep grades, empty tarmac and Hmong villages.

Chiang KhongEnd · Descend to the Mekong and end in Chiang Khong opposite Laos. Riverside guesthouses face Houayxai — combine with the Golden Triangle circuit for a 2-day border run.
