Thailand's second-largest island packs some of its steepest tarmac. The west coast road from White Sand Beach to Bang Bao fishing village is short but ferocious — a rollercoaster of concrete hairpins over jungle headlands, dropping into one beach bay after another. Locals treat the gradients with respect, and so should you: low gears down, momentum up, and never in the wet without good tyres. Reward at the end is seafood on Bang Bao's kilometre-long wooden pier. Best November–March in the dry season.
