Koh Chang West Coast — White Sand Beach to Bang Bao.
Thailand's second-largest island packs some of its steepest tarmac. The west coast road from White Sand Beach to Bang Bao fishing village is short but ferocious — a rollercoaster of concrete hairpins over jungle headlands, dropping into one beach bay after another. Locals treat the gradients with respect, and so should you: low gears down, momentum up, and never in the wet without good tyres. Reward at the end is seafood on Bang Bao's kilometre-long wooden pier. Best November–March in the dry season.

The route.
White Sand BeachStart · Start at White Sand Beach, Koh Chang's main strip. Fuel up here — petrol stations sit on this northern stretch of the coast road, not in the south.
Kai Bae Beach & ViewpointScenic Point · The Kai Bae viewpoint overlooks a chain of four offshore islets. South of here the road tips into the island's infamous steep concrete hairpins — low gear, no coasting.
Lonely BeachScenic Point · Backpacker village with cheap eats and beach bars. The hairpin climbs either side of Lonely Beach are the steepest on the island — moss makes them treacherous after rain.
Bang Bao Fishing VillageRestaurant · Seafood lunch on Bang Bao's long wooden pier, a stilt village over the sea. Boats leave from here for Koh Wai and Koh Mak.
White Sand BeachEnd · Return north on the same coast road — the hairpins ride completely differently in this direction. Sunset over the Gulf from the beach bars.
